Reflections on Being an American

July 15, 2016

Our nation just celebrated its 240th anniversary of independence. I thought it would be good to reflect on the blessings of being an American.

It is very easy for us to think about what is wrong with America. Everyday we are bombarded with a constant flow of negative news. There are a great many good things also happening, but all-too-often we and others gloss over these events.

What’s right with America? America is a global leader in the principles that matter most: The rule of law, freedom of religion, equal rights, freedom from an oppressive government, and freedom of speech. How about the way we treat the less fortunate? It’s not just the wealthy who are generous. Americans give billions to charity every year. According to GivingUSA.org, Americans give more generously than any other nation on earth – to equal the charitable contributions of one American it takes seven Germans, three of the French, and 14 Italians. And to get into our world-class universities you just have to be smart enough and work hard for it. Our universities are ranked about the best in the world (US News & World Report, Oct. 5, 2015).

So, if anyone asks you, “What’s right with America?” You can proudly say, “Americans are always working towards improving our world.”

We hope you had a wonderful July 4th celebration of our nation’s independence!
